See, hear, smell – a new way to experience art!
The exhibition Light Sound Senses by the Heidi Horten Collection.
"Stimulating minds, inspiring hearts" – this is the Heidi Horten Collection. Opened in 2022, the museum in the heart of Vienna is a true gem of the art world. Currently, it delights art connoisseurs and enthusiasts with two new exhibitions: one permanent and one temporary. *Light Sound Senses*, as a limited-time exhibition, explores light both as a physical and natural phenomenon and as an aesthetically versatile medium. Through its multisensory works by various artists, it aims to engage the diverse sensory perceptions of its visitors.
Source of Inspiration
At the Heidi Horten Museum, just a stone's throw from the Albertina and the Vienna State Opera, it’s not just about displaying art—it’s about creating experiences and fostering interactions. This approach is particularly evident in the temporary exhibition *Light Sound Senses*. Here, visitors are invited to interact with multisensory artworks that heighten their awareness of space, time, light, sound, taste, and touch.
The artists featured in the exhibition experiment with various light techniques to evoke emotional moods and transform spaces. Sound adds another layer, amplifying the visual experience and intensifying the emotional impact of the works.
The pieces on display include works from the Heidi Horten Collection, loans from TBA21, and site-specific immersive installations created exclusively for the exhibition by invited artists.
Contemplation and Reflection
The exhibition, spanning two floors, offers the chance to experience innovative light installations by Olafur Eliasson, Brigitte Kowanz, and Siegrun Appelt, which explore topics such as light pollution and the scientific foundations of daylight research. Neon, as an artistic and conceptual material, is further explored by Tracey Emin and Joseph Kosuth, while the immersive sound installation by Austrian artist Bernhard Leitner encourages visitors to see sound.
Additionally, Carsten Nicolai has created an interactive light-sound installation specifically for this exhibition, engaging visitors actively in the creative process. Works by Lena Henke and Ernesto Neto stimulate the sense of smell and taste, rounding out the multisensory experience.
The Heidi Horten Collection, renowned for its pioneering and diverse acquisitions, once again fosters the dialogue between art, technology, and sensory perception with this exhibition. The works selected for the temporary exhibition Light Sound Senses also impressively illustrate the collection's role as an innovative driving force in Vienna's art scene, establishing itself as a dynamic, international hub for interdisciplinary artistic approaches.
