When the holiday starts during the journey

Holiday at the train station in Annaberg

Veronika Nutz moved from the airport to the train station, so to speak. For years she worked as a business consultant at one of Europe’s largest airports – until she moved to Annaberg for love. “I reorganised my life here – I wanted to work in the region and stop commuting to Vienna and travelling the world. Aside from that I was a big fan of the Gilmore Girls and always wanted to run a small, quaint hotel like Lorelei Gilmore”, Veronika Nutz is clearly enthusiastic. When, in 2014, the train station Wienerbruck was put up for sale it did not take long for her to decide.

The operator of “Urlaub am Bahnhof” (= holiday at the train station) explains: “For me it was clear that the train station was in the perfect spot for tourism: sunny, right by the Wienerbruck reservoir at the entrance to the natural park Ötscher-Tormäuer, and obviously right next to the narrow-gauged Mariazeller railway which still stops here.” Together with her husband Jürgen, a master painter, she put a lot of passion and effort into the renovations of the historic building from 1905 and since 2015 they have been welcoming guests to their two family-friendly holiday apartments “Ötscherbär” and “Himmelstreppe”.

Destress

A big advantage of this accommodation: thanks to the location right by the Mariazeller railway, holidaymakers can leave their car at home, they can shop at the nearby famers and in the train station’s own large garden herbs, fruit, and vegetables can be harvested. The Nutz family is always happy to help should there be any questions and they make a stay at the train station into an unforgettable holiday experience.

Out into nature

Veronika Nutz knows: “The hiking paths through one of Austria’s most beautiful landscapes, the Ötschergräben gorge, start just outside our door.” Especially young holidaymakers will find that the region is one big adventure playground. With her three children Leo, Anna, and Nora she often walks through Austria’s Grand Canyon – which is how Ötschergräben are called around here. Aside from this, however, the Annaberg region also leaves no wishes unfulfilled. “Anna-Alm on Hennesteck in Annaberg, Gemeindealpe-Mitterbach with its mountain carts, Hubertus lake in Walster, and the crystal-clear Erlauf lake in Mitterbach are also amazing,” knows the host. A train station is a place of encounter – and that is precisely the philosophy the Nutz family has realised with their train station.
