Sun lovers, active holidaymakers, and lovers of art are all equally attracted to this magical place in Upper Bavaria. Prien am Chiemsee offers each guest a veritable sea of possibilities. Which is something even an independent jury appreciated, and it promptly awarded the place the title “Genussort” or “Place of Indulgence” on occasion of the Bavarian Free State’s 100th anniversary.
300 applicants fought for this special award and in the end Prien and 99 other destinations did it. What certainly played an important role in the decision-making process was the unique location by lake Chiemsee which – with its 25 kinds of fish – is one of Bavaria’s most precious and productive fishing region. And a year-round attraction for guests from all over the world.
Prien invites you to discover: in particular the craftsmen neighbourhood with its historic buildings, the parish church Mariä Himmelfahrt, the old steam train “Bockerlbahn”, the local museum, and the gallery in the old town hall are all worth a visit. The dock Prien/Stock is the most important starting point for trips to the two famous islands Herreninsel and Fraueninsel.
Herreninsel beckons with what is probably the region’s most famous sight, the castle Herrenchiemsee which was built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria and houses truly impressive murals; Fraueninsel, on the other hand, is home to Germany’s oldest artist colony.
The Chiemsee region also offers a large variety of activities. Starting with mountain biking, trail running, and hiking tours in the Chiemgau Alps to inline skating, leisure cycling paths such as the Chiemsee Rundweg (a circular route) or the Mozart cycling path, all the way to golf on eleven renowned golf courses located in an impressive natural landscape. Families with little discoverers can look forward to professionally organised natural adventure tours where local flora and fauna can be examined. Another adventurous highlight is the Prien climbing wall, where bridges, nets, ropes, and other surprises provide plenty of excitement.
Adventure and wellness pool, slides tower, bubble massages, and flow channel – all this can be found at PRIENAVERA Erlebnisbad. Located right by the lakeside promenade the pool guarantees action and relaxation in every weather – there are six indoor pools and the PRIENAVERA beach bath with its impressive view of the Herrenchiemsee castle. The wellness area also offers varied saunas, the King Ludwig Salt Spa, an outdoor sauna garden, and various wellness treatments.
Prien also has quite the range of culinary delights on offer for its guests. From popular grilled fish on a stick to Bavarian delicacies, international dishes, and haute cuisine – Chiemsee lake will satisfy even the most sophisticated palates.
Letting you indulge on all levels and by every trick in the book – Prien am Chiemsee is a truly wonderful place all around the year. And one that is only an hour away from Munich – by car or by train.
